Three North American music-rights organisations announce aligned registration policies for partly AI-generated works

The archive provides Chinese and English research texts. Translations may be AI-assisted and may not yet have received independent human review. Consult the original-language sources alongside them.

The three organisations jointly announce that compositions combining AI-generated elements and human creation may be registered and included in their respective licensed repertoires, while fully AI-generated works are excluded. SOCAN’s same-day guidance separately addresses author responsibility, no requirement to identify AI portions, and procedures for suspending royalties on suspected non-compliant works.

What changed

The three organisations jointly announce that compositions combining AI-generated elements and human creation may be registered and included in their respective licensed repertoires, while fully AI-generated works are excluded. SOCAN’s same-day guidance separately addresses author responsibility, no requirement to identify AI portions, and procedures for suspending royalties on suspected non-compliant works.

RESEARCH NOTE

Read BMI’s Spanish joint announcement, HTML lines 27–43, dated 28 October 2025. It announces that each organisation has adopted a policy, but does not prove that all three procedures are identical or that every work receives legal protection. Characterisations of unlicensed training are attributed to the organisations. SOCAN’s previously read French guide corroborates the registration policy; the registration interface, actual processing and historical versions were not checked. SOCAN’s specific rules cannot automatically be applied to BMI and ASCAP.

Editorial research question

Editorial interpretation: places acceptance of AI-assisted creation alongside opposition to unlicensed training, distinguishing work registration, training permission and legal protection.

This is an editorial interpretation or question, separate from factual statements.
